All you need is just a few selected varieties of herbs with bright space and a spirit of adventure.
Fresh herbs help you to enhance your cooking, makes your recipes tastier and healthier. You can have it around for your stews, salads or soups. You can also use these herbs for garnishing or like chutney. You just don’t need to keep merely the common herbs in your kitchen garden, take a try on something else; you never know what you can get.
Here is a list of handy herbs which will give you a feeling of natural living, satisfaction with numerous of health benefits.
Basil is known as ‘Tulsi’ in India, and it is one of the most sacred herbs in Indian Culture. There are different species namely; Kashi Tulsi, Lakshmi Tulsi, and Krishna Tulsi. Each of them has different shape, texture, and fragrance. Basil provides you healthy doses of vitamins A, C and K. This sacred herb is also rich in iron, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. It is an excellent source of antioxidants. Basil herb is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties. It also works as a good insect repellent for ants, cockroaches, mosquitoes and much more. Fresh and dried leaves are used in dishes, salads, pesto, and sauces.
Usually, Basil herb germination time is 5-10 days; it needs moist, rich and well-drained soil for good growth.
Coriander/ Cilantro
Coriander is an herb rich in Vitamins, Minerals, antioxidants and much more. It is a revitalizing herb that relieves inflammation, helps in digestion and saves from gastric problems. It is also helpful in blood sugar as it stimulates the better production of insulin. One can use coriander in numerous ways such as a garnish, dips, chutney for snack items and much more. It is ideal for Indian cuisines, Southeast Asian and other spicy foods. The dominant aroma and flavor of Cilantro make it an exceptional seasoning in distinctive dishes and salads too.
Cilantro/ Coriander usually take 5-7 days for germination. It needs preferably shade with little sunlight for proper growth with well-drained soil.
Lavender is one of the versatile herbs as it is used in dressings, seasoning, baking, and salads giving a slightly sweet flavor. Lavender is a natural deterrent for garden pests as well as mosquitoes. This herb is widely used in aromatherapy because of its soothing effect on headaches and snake bites. It needs well-drained soil and germination period is 14-21 days.
Oregano leaves and its oil are used to treat digestive upset, respiratory maladies, fungal infections, skin conditions, muscles aches and joint pain. Oregano is used as a seasoning for meats, egg dishes, legumes, poultry, seafood, and bread. It needs germination period of 7-14 days in well-drained soil.
Stevia is a natural sweetener without any calories. It is also referred as sugar leaf or sweet leaf, which is the natural sweetener and the best substitute for sugar. Stevia helps to fight diabetes, LDL cholesterol, which helps to prevent heart disease. Stevia is widely used in the smoothie, tea, coffee, yogurt and other beverages.
Giloy is widely used to cure and treat numerous diseases and disorders. Giloy is useful in the restoration and promotion of health, relieves anxiety and stress. It is beneficial during Dengue as it increases the platelets count. Gilloy helps to boost the immune system, treats chronic fever, improves digestion, treats diabetes, fights respiratory problems, treats arthritis, reduces asthmatic symptoms and reduces signs of aging.
Mint is known as Pudina in India which is a green colored, aromatic herb full of fragrance. It helps to freshen the breath and provides aid for digestion. It is a good source of potassium, calcium and Vitamin B. It also provides relief in irritable bowel syndrome, sinus congestion, menstrual cramps, and headache. It is used to prepare shikanji, chutney, beverages, and desserts. It needs 10-15 days for germination, rich soil and partial shade for the proper growth.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is a multipurpose herb which is used to cook dessert item. It is also used as a beauty cosmetic, food ingredient and for other purposes. It produces yellow sticky fluid and transparent jelly. Both have different benefits, and they are used in distinctive ways. You can use it as a beauty treatment, beauty packs, edible gels, juice, gelatin and much more.
Parsley gives a boost to your immune system and fights bad breath. It is a good source of antioxidants, Vitamin A, C and it’s good for digestion because of its anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps to detoxify the body. Parsley is widely used to garnish the food and gives extra balanced flavor to the stews. It is also used in salad dressing as well as in curry items. The germination period is 15-30 days, and it needs shade partly with well-drained soil.
